Prepping Your Quilt Top for the Long Arm

Step One

Quilt Top Preparation

Press the quilt top: Ensure your quilt top is clean and well-pressed, with seams lying flat. This helps prevent puckering during the quilting process.

Check for loose threads: Trim any loose or dangling threads from both the front and back of the quilt top. These threads can show through lighter fabrics or cause problems during quilting.

Square up your quilt: Measure the quilt top to make sure it’s squared off. Uneven edges can cause issues when attaching the quilt on the long arm machine.

Step Two

Backing Fabric Preparation

Size matters: The backing fabric needs to be 4-6 inches larger on all sides than the quilt top. For example, if your quilt top is 60" x 80", the backing should be at least 68" x 88".

Press the backing fabric: Just like the quilt top, press your backing fabric to remove wrinkles and folds.

Seams on the backing: Seams on the backing and pieced backing are fine, just make sure they are pressed well.

Step Three

Batting Preparation

Ensure batting is the correct size: Like the backing fabric, the batting should also be 4-6 inches larger than the quilt top on all sides.

Select the right batting: If you’re providing your own batting, make sure it suits your quilting project.
